Library Services
Circulation This department is responsible for checking out and re-shelving books from the main stacks and videos, managing the main collections, assisting with computers and copiers. A Livingstone College ID card is required to check materials out of the library. Faculty, staff, students and Library Friends have a loan period of two weeks.
Interlibrary Loan For books and articles not owned by Carnegie Library we may be able to borrow these material from other libraries. Although most items can be obtained free, sometimes libraries will charge a fee. The requestor is responsible for paying all related costs for ILL. The Library processes requests in compliance with U.S. Copyright Laws.
Collection Development The Library offer an array of collections development activities including purchasing material with input form the faculty, evaluating the collection, inventory and weeding of the collection. All practices of the collection development are detailed in the Carnegie Library Collection Development policy.
Reference Services The Reference collection is located on the first floor in the back of the building. Dictionaries, encyclopedias, almanacs, atlases, indexes and vertical file materials are part of this collection. Library Staff is available to assist students with their research projects.
Library Instruction The Library provides information about the use of print and electronic resources, and is available to all students. All faculty are encouraged to participate in the library instruction program to help develop for their student information literacy skills. Back to top
Academic Reserves The Reserve collection consists of volumes from the general book collection by faculty members for loans of 2 hours in the library. These books are required readings. Professors may place personal copies and articles on reserve to ensure that students have sufficient reading materials for class. Also, some professors place course textbooks on reserve. Serials such as Black Enterprise, Ebony, and Jet may be available in print. Other serials are provided in microform and reader/printers are available for public use. Electronic serials may be accessed through the JSTOR and NCLIVE databases. Additionally, NCLIVE provides access to newspapers such as the Wall Street Journal, New York Times, Washington Post and Charlotte Observer. These databases can be accessed using any PC connected to the campus network. Back to top
Computer Lab A full-service computer lab, a word processing section, and computers dedicated online public access catalogs (OPAC) are available. See Computer Use Policy for library computers for more information.
Photocopying & printing There is a photocopier available on the first floor of the library. The cost per page is $.10. Students are allowed to print 10 pages from the computer labs for free. All subsequent pages are charged at a rate of $.10 per page.
Bloomberg Financial Markets database provides multimedia, analytical and news services which students can use to research companies, analyze securities and monitor news for their business and journalism classes. Students have access to job listings in the finance field and can post resumes in a national job database.
Technical Services This department handles the purchase, cataloging and physical processing of all library materials. Back to top
SPECIAL COLLECTIONS
African-American Collection An extensive African-American collection is available for perusal by faculty, staff, students and members of the Salisbury Community. The collection continues to grow with the most current authors and the modern concerns of our time. Back to top
Library Archives The archival holdings include a variety of formats such as correspondence, meeting minutes, photographs, yearbooks, pamphlets, publications, newspapers, architectural drawings, memorabilia, audio/visual recordings, and other ephemera. The library is working to catalog these holdings to make them more easily searchable.
Dancy Collection This special collection of items donated by the family of the Honorable John C. Dancy. This collection includes a variety of books.
Special Collections These items include rare and valuable books pulled from the circulating collection in order to safeguard them. One example includes an autographed copy of The Importance of Pot Liquor by Jackie Torrence.
