The Livingstone College women’s basketball team defeated the Chowan University Lady Hawks 75-61 Monday evening in Murfreesboro, NC.

The Lady Blue Bears had three players to score double figures.

Livingstone opened the game with good team basketball. Junior guard Cierra York found fellow guards Tiffany Evans and Diamond Tolliver, who rained three pointers over the Lady Hawks. Those big shots gave the Lady Blue Bears post offense a chance to work in the paint. Sophie Lepzem contributed eight points to the win. Lepzem had a big night defensively as she grabbed eight defensive rebounds. She finished the game with a team high 11 rebounds. Lepzem tied the game at the end of the first half, but the Lady Hawks’ quick layup put them in the lead 32-30.

In the second half, Ashley Walker’s three pointer at the 10:43 mark pushed the Lady Blue Bears to go on an 8-0 run. Tolliver’s sole steal of the game led to the Lady Blue Bears largest gap of the game by 14 points. Tolliver contributed 15 points to the win.

The Lady Blue Bears found their rhythm with Evan’s drive to the basket late in the second half. Evans finished the game with a game high 17 points. Evans played a solid game as she hit 5-of-10 shots in the field, 3-of-5 shots from behind the three point line and was 100 percent from the charity stripe. Evans also recorded five rebounds, two steals and one block.

York also played well for the Lady Blue Bears. York shot 54 percent, recording 16 points. York grabbed four rebounds, three steals and five assists.

The win improves the Lady Blue Bears record to 9-7 overall and 4-2 in the CIAA.

The Lady Blue Bears return to action on January 18 as they host the Bears of Shaw University. Game time is slated for 5:30 p.m.
