Blue Bears Give Best at JCSU Invitational

The Livingstone men and women track and field teams traveled to the 2014 JCSU Invitational hosted by Johnson C. Smith University and had some very strong performances in the last regular season meet.

The weekend was led off by the Javelin throw on Friday evening where Freshman Daniel King was able to notch a 5th place finish with a throw of 42.23 meters, just off his best of 42.43. Sophomore Ronald Harris was also able to place in the top 10 with a season’s best 38.26 meters placing him 9th.

On Saturday, the sprinters had the most success with Freshman Tollis Johnson running 11.02 to qualify for the finals then running 10.99 to tab a 7th place finish in the 100 meter dash. Freshman Dajon Wise was able to drop his season’s best time by .14 seconds running 11.19 to place 13th respectively. In the 200 meters Senior Justin Avery was able to get the event win with a time of 21.77 seconds. Freshman William Tatum reached a new plateau by breaking the 50 second mark for the first time in his collegiate career running 49.95 in the 400 meters to finish 13th overall. In the sprint hurdles Sophomore Otis Tisdale notched two season’s bests running 15.02 in the preliminary round and 14.73 in the finals to finish as the first collegiate athlete but 2nd overall over 110 meters of hurdles.

At the longer distance, Sophomore Antonio Washington reached a collegiate best in the 800 meters running 1:57.59 to finish 4th overall. The relay events were able to match success with the 400 meter relay team of Wise, Avery, Johnson, and Tisdale carrying the baton successfully around the track for a second place finish at 42.03 seconds. The 1600 meter relay team of Tisdale, Avery, Washington, and Tatum crossed the finish line in 3rd with a season’s best time of 3:22.29.

In other throwing events Freshmen Garland Archie and Vance Griffin finished 3rd and 7th respectively making marks of 14.20 meters and 13.05 meters. Archie also matched success in the discus with a 6th place finish with a throw of 41.61.

Not to be outdone over the weekend Senior woman Miracle Wigfall threw a personal best of 27.56 meters in the javelin to finish 7th. Freshman Ebony Moore finished in 9th with a throw of 24.95 meters.
The two were also able to throw personal bests in their primary events. Moore saw a personal best of 12.26 meters in the shot put to finish 2nd in the events while Wigfall also finished 2nd in the discus throwing 34.98 meters.

Junior 400 meter National Champion Quanera Hayes looks to match her 2013 performance by solidifying her as the Division II nation’s best with an NCAA automatic qualifying time of 52.49 in the 400 meters. She was also an event winner in the 200 meter dash running 23.73 seconds.

Senior Annakay Edwards was a second place finisher in the 1500 meter run in a time of 5:12.36

The Blue Bears will have a short week of practice and plan to match their success at the CIAA Outdoor Championships at Virginia State University on April 18-19th.
